Ever since 2002 I rummage with my camera through the region of my youth, the Northeast Polder, ever planned as the perfect land. In twelve years’ time a photo book has developed out of dreams and clay: Polderlichaam. For my own first photo book I wanted a very special edition. Black-and-white photographs with plenty of contrast in deep blacks and subtle light tones. But on uncoated paper indeed because image and paper must form one unity. I went to Raddraaier because I have worked with them for so many years and they are always excellent in thinking along with me. We made three proofs with photographs on sheets in order to find the proper paper (Munken Polar), the proper image curves (image adaptation I did myself) and the most beautiful black tones.
A most intensive and close cooperation followed, when I stood next to the printing press for four days. So that there and then we could optimize the quality of ever so many matters. In this way we added a special varnish in the end to effect the black shades to what they are now: punchy and yet creamy.
The printing result is fantastic, thanks to Jochem, Cia and both printers Jerrel and André.
